Ideas for Making Money
with your Greenhouse

How can you start a Greenhouse Business and turn your Hobby
into Income?

A Home Greenhouse is a great investment and your hobby can easily be turned into a Business. You can enjoy Greenhouse gardening, feed your family nutritious healthy food and make money with your Greenhouse Business at the same time.

All those Seedlings and Plants that you do not have any room for can be turned into Cash. Due to the high cost of transportation and the trend to buy locally grown produce, now is a great time to make some extra money with your plants.

Here are some creative Ideas and Information for making money with your Greenhouse and a few examples of where you might want to pursue selling your plants for extra Income.

Florist shops

A Greenhouse is a great Idea for a healthier lifestyle and to earn an extra income from selling plants, vegetables and cut flowers. You can turn your hobby into business and have fun at the same time.

Florist Shops are a great place to sell your plants and cut flowers. Florists are usually premium product sellers and your profit from this type of sale should be really good. You should pot your plants into pretty containers, as product quality and presentation are the key.
Most Florists will take your plants on a consignment basis and pay you at the end of the week or month. They can be a steady market for your plants and they can let you know ahead of time about what seasonal plants they may be looking for.

Flea Markets

Flea Markets are another venue where you might consider selling your plants and produce. It could be a full or part time business for you. Most Flea Markets charge $20-30 for a weekend sale; the amount of traffic you get is excellent and it is a very reasonable way to sell your products.
If you do not want to invest money and/or time at the Flea Market, another way would be to offer your plants and fresh produce to a Flea Market operator on a consignment basis for resale or you could see if he would be interested in buying them directly and resell them. This way you have no investment in time or money.
In general, a Flea Market will have less competition for fresh produce than a Farmer's Market, but a Farmer's Market will have more people specifically looking to buy fruit and vegetables.

Farmers Markets

You can sell your Greenhouse Plants and Vegetables for Cash and it can be a part time or a full time job. Click on this picture to see our Growing Vegetables Chart.

Farmers Markets work pretty much the same way as the Flea Markets, only Farmers Markets tend to focus on fruits and vegetables. You can work the Farmers Markets the same way as you would the Flea Markets. You can share the cost of a stall or sell your produce to a grower who is already there.
Many people come to the Farmers Market to buy fresh fruit and vegetables; you can sell a lot of them, so you need to bring enough to last the day.
Selling to Farmers Markets allows you more flexibility than selling to Restaurants. If, for whatever reason, you do not deliver the produce expected, the repercussions are less consequential.

Some ideas for a successful display:

  • Make signs for all your fruit and vegetables with each name and price.

  • Put as many of your fruit and vegetables out as you can, while still keeping them fresh in shade, as people like a large display to choose from.

  • Put each of your crops in a group to make large blocks of color.

Roadside Stands

People love to stop at Roadside Stands to buy fresh fruit and vegetables. You do not have to travel far to sell your crops, roadside stands can be close to your home.

If you want to sell your produce at a Roadside Stand:

  • Check whether there are any rules about Roadside Stands and signs.
  • Look for a place with high visibility, where your Roadside Stand can be easily seen.
  • Look for a place where a lot of cars go by and where the cars go slow enough to be able to stop.
  • Look for a place where people can park their cars.
